President Biden has commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and granted 39 pardons, marking the largest single-day pardons in modern history, the White House announced Thursday morning.

Sentences have been commuted for prisoners placed on home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic who have “successfully reintegrated into their families and communities,” the announcement said.

The 39 people pardoned were convicted of non-violent crimes.

“The President has issued more lenient sentences at this stage of his presidency than any of his recent predecessors at the same stage of their first term,” the White House said.

The move comes as the president faces bipartisan scrutiny over his pardon of his son, Hunter, on felony gun and tax charges.
