The Israeli army says that two soldiers were killed in a shooting attack in the occupied West Bank, where its forces continue to have a major operation against Palestinian armed groups in the northern region.
A military statement said that eight other soldiers were wounded when a Palestinian gunman opened fire at a checkpoint in the village of Tayasir, two kilometers (1.2 miles) north of Tobas. The attacker said.
Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic jihad praised the attack as a reaction to the Israeli operation in Topas, Jenin and Tammakram, but they did not say that they were behind this.
Meanwhile, a UN official warned of the situation in the refugee camp in Jenin in a “catastrophic direction”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the beginning of a large -scale operation to defeat “terrorism” in Jenin on January 21, three days after the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was suspended. The process was expanded to Tulkarm and Tubas last week.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health says that the Israeli forces have killed 70 Palestinians throughout the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, since the beginning of the year.
The number 25 has been reported in the Jenin and 13 in the Tubas and Tulkarm areas in the past two weeks.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they had killed about 55 “terrorists” and arrested 380 people wanted throughout the West Bank in January.
The Israeli media reported that the Palestinians who carried out the shooting attack on Tuesday in Tayasir managed to infiltrate into a military position next to the checkpoint before opening the M16 rifle in the soldiers stationed there.
They said that the soldiers opened fire and continued the battle of a gun several minutes before the striker was killed.
The Israeli Defense Army launched the Soldiers Award that was killed as Sergeant President Yong Young, 39, and Sergeant Mag Eveham Friedman, 43.
She said that two of the eight wounded soldiers were in serious condition in the hospital.
The head of the IDF Central Command, Maj Gen Avi Bluth, said the attack was “evidence of the need to fight terrorism in the (West Bank).”
“We are determined to continue the process and expand it as needed and achieve victory,” he added.
Hamas praised what he described as “the heroic and qualitative operation carried out by a Palestinian resistance fighter” in Tayasir, saying that it showed “the crimes of the occupation and its aggression against the northern West Bank will not go without punishment.”
On Monday, a spokesman for the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas claimed that the Israeli operation was part of a broader effort aimed at “removing citizens and ethnic cleansing.”
Speaking to journalists in Geneva on Tuesday, Juliet Touma warned of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA) of the deterioration of the situation in the Jenin refugee camp.
Hundreds of Israeli -backed Israeli security forces, drones and armored bulldozers have carried out raids in the camp, which have long been seen as a stronghold of armed groups.
“Large parts of the camp were completely destroyed in a series of bombings by the Israeli forces. It is estimated that 100 homes were destroyed or severely damaged.”
“This bombing, which occurred on Sunday, was when the children were supposed to return to school,” she added.
The Israeli Defense Army said on Sunday that it was “dismantling” 23 structures, where there are explosives, weapons, monitoring and other infrastructure laboratories that belong to armed groups.
Mrs. Toma also said that UNRWA, who has not been able to provide services in the camp since early December, has not received any prior warning of the explosions from the Israeli authorities.
On Thursday, laws were issued from the Israeli parliament last year, which banned UNRWA's activity on Israeli soil and prohibits communication between Israeli officials and UNRWA employees. Israeli officials accuse UNRWA of being complicit with Hamas – a claim that the agency denies.
Mrs. Toma said that the Israeli government “did not communicate with UNRWA how they intend to implement” laws, and that the UNRWA teams were “currently residing and handing”.
