Former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clarathey deny Accusation that they covered up Child sexual abuse that allegedly occurred at their home in New York and at a summer camp connected to their church.
A lawsuit filed Jan. 16 in state Supreme Court in Westchester accuses Mariano, 55, and Clara of pressuring the plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe, to keep quiet about being sexually assaulted at the dorm and shower at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, FL, and then at the Rivera Home For an older minor girl.
“Mariano and Clara Rivera do not tolerate child abuse of any kind and claims that they knew of or failed to act on reports of child abuse are completely false,” Joseph ARiveras' attorney said in A statement Thursday. “The first time they heard about these allegations was nearly four years after the alleged incident, when in 2022 a New York attorney sent a letter requesting a financial settlement. This was followed by a second letter in 2023, from a different law firm in Florida, again requesting Financial settlement.
“The lawsuit, which seeks monetary damages for Riveras’ alleged failure to act on alleged incidents that were never reported, is riddled with inaccurate and misleading statements that would be beyond question in a court of law.”

According to court documents, Jane Doe complained to her mother about the alleged abuse, which she says occurred during a 2018 summer internship at the camp. The mother allegedly brought the case to Clara, who runs the church's daily operations, and says Clara promised to investigate.

“Instead of taking adequate action to end the sexual assault of Jane Doe (the victim), Rivas both separately isolated and bullied Jane Doe into staying silent about MG’s (suspect) abuse to avoid causing trouble at Shelter of Hope and ignite Summer Life Training,” the complaint says. “
The abuse then reportedly continued at the Riveras' home during barbecues to which the plaintiff and the suspect were invited, but not the plaintiff's parents.
