Newcastle United chairman Paul Mitchell has reportedly agreed a shock deal for the player who looked set to leave the club.
According to the latest reports, the Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has now agreed terms to extend his stay at St James' Park Although he agreed at some point to move to the Saudi Al-Shabab Club.
It seemed very likely Dubravka will leave Newcastle to join Al-YoubabBut in the end, the deal was not completed, and he is now set to remain where he is until at least the end of the season.
Although Dubravka isn't Eddie Howe's first-choice side anymore, he remains a useful squad player and a back-up option for the club, so most fans probably feel this is good news.
Martin Dubravka makes a U-turn after the talks
According to reports, Dubravka's conversations with Mitchell have convinced him to back out of his future at Newcastle.
The former Manchester United player performed well in the recent win away to Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, in what was expected to be his final game for the north-eastern side.
However, Dubravka has been persuaded to stay put, which follows Howe who has also spoken very positively about him recently.
“I think Martin was in a difficult situation, like any player whose contract expires in the summer,” Howe said earlier this month.
“Always with any player I've worked with, there's always a sense of doubt. It's normal for him to want some conclusion in his future, whether it's a new contract with us or whatever the outcome.
“But he definitely played very well and I'm very happy with him. I think he played more than his part in the last series of games. Against Arsenal, I thought he was very good, so hopefully we can reach some sort of agreement with him.”
