The mega auction of IPL 2025, which was held from November 24-25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, saw a major reshuffle in the team lineups. The auction had 574 players vying for 204 slots, including 366 Indian players and 208 players from abroad, including participants from the USA and Scotland. Teams entered with revised strategies, taking advantage of the increased salary cap and the Right to Match (RTM) rule, which allowed them to re-acquire some released players.

Group 1 included big names like Mitchell Starc, Jos Buttler, Rishabh Pant and Kagiso Rabada, all of whom start at a base price of Rs 2 crore. These players saw intense bidding wars as teams sought to change the rules of the game for the upcoming season.

The second set featured KL Rahul, Liam Livingstone and Yuzvendra Chahal, adding more excitement to the marquee segment.


Player categories:

Players were organized into groups based on roles: batsmen, all-rounders, bowlers, wicket-keepers and spinners. This ensures a variety of options for franchisees to fill specific holes on their teams.

Notable players like Harry Brook, Devon Conway, and Ravichandran Ashwin brought in big performances.


Strategic adjustments:

Imposing a price cap on foreign players has added value to Indian players, especially players who have not played before. Franchises like Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have been particularly aggressive, given their large budgets available
