Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca defended goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his latest error gifted Wolves a goal in the Blues' 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Sanchez dropped a corner kick at the feet of Matt Doherty, who scored the equalizer after Tosin had put Chelsea ahead.

The former Brighton goalkeeper has now made four errors that have led to goals in the Premier League this season, with only Ipswich Town's Arjanet Muric (5) making more in the competition.

Mariska said: “You said this is the fourth mistake (that led to a goal)? Ok, how many times did he save us? More than four. So no problem.

“It happens. Mistakes happen to him, to the strikers and to the midfielders. He's in good shape.”

Chelsea signed Filip Jorgensen last summer, releasing Kepa and Dorde Petrovic on loan with Bournemouth and Strasbourg respectively.

Chelsea have not won in the English Premier League since mid-December, but they sealed the win thanks to second-half goals from Mark Cucurella and Noni Madueke.

Maresca was pleased with the way his team responded to Sanchez's mistake to end a five-match winless run.

“In the first 40 minutes we were on top,” he said. “The performance was excellent and we controlled the game. We scored and created many chances.

“Then in the last five minutes of the half, what has happened in the last five games happened again.

“Wolves had a little confidence and they scored their goal and then we started to suffer a little. We started the second half well and then after the second and third goals we took control of the game.
