Last November, I was honored when the voters came in My great state, Nevada He re-elected me to the US Senate. In that same election, Nevadans also voted to elect Donald Trump as President of the United States, the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since 2004. A crucial issue in both races was the rising cost of living, which is pressing hard. Hardworking Nevada families create financial hardship. Families are frustrated by the high prices they see, and they have every right to be. During the election, voters clearly expressed their economic frustration at the ballot box.
Americans work hard every day, but many of them are still struggling to get by because prices have risen dramatically over the past few years, from the grocery store to the gas pump. This has forced families across the country to make difficult choices about whether to put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads, or fill their cupboards. That is why I have been pressing Washington to take the necessary action Lower costs for families And ease their financial burdens, to give them the breathing space they desperately need.
Since coming to Congress, I've been clear that I will work with anyone — regardless of party or ideology — to provide assistance to families in my state. I focus on results, not playing politics. That's why I have repeatedly been ranked as one of the most independent and bipartisan Senators in the country. We certainly won't agree on every issue, but if Trump is serious about providing financial assistance to hardworking families by cutting costs, I'm willing to try to work with him on this. Here are some ways we can get started.
One of Trump's most prominent campaign promises, which he unveiled in Nevada, was to end taxes on tips paid to service workers. Growing up in a working-class family and working as a waitress while going to school, I know what it's like to work multiple jobs and rely on tips to help make ends meet. I've never forgotten where I came from, and I'm not afraid to embrace a good idea, even if it comes from the other side of the aisle.
That's why I was quick to support this proposal in the last Congress and will support legislation to implement it again this year. By ending income taxes on tips, while putting in place guardrails to prevent wealthy people like CEOs from exploiting loopholes, we can ensure that Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.
Another idea floated during the campaign is to reduce taxes on hardworking families by expanding and increasing the child tax credit. In fact, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance has called for the amount to be raised to $5,000. This tax credit has been a major lifeline for working families in Nevada and across the country who are doing their best to keep their heads above water.

This extra money makes a big difference to families who are now able to afford quality child care, buy essentials like diapers and baby wipes, or pay for a doctor's visit. By reducing the tax burden on families through the enhanced child tax credit, we are investing in American families and strengthening our country as a result.
We can also work together to make renting or owning a home easier for families across the country. Trump and I have called on the Fed to lower interest rates, which would help bring down housing prices. We must also work to strengthen America's construction workforce and increase our housing supply, which will lower costs and help more families find an affordable place to live. And we can take steps to make more federally owned land available for responsible development of affordable housing.

As Congress and the next administration continue to negotiate the next comprehensive tax package, we must focus on making sure it provides real tax relief for America's middle class. Individuals, families and small businesses deserve space to breathe and peace of mind. We can achieve this by ensuring that this package primarily benefits them, not big corporations and the super-rich.

What we need are common sense, progressive economic policies that put the American people first. That's why I'm deeply concerned about Trump's plan to enact sweeping tariffs. This would lead to higher prices that Americans would have to pay at the checkout, and would destroy the budgets of working families. This is not the way to help the working class, and I hope he quickly realizes the harm that broad tariffs would do to consumers.
Hardworking Americans face real financial challenges that impact their lives every day. We can work together to reduce costs and set families up for success. I am willing to work with anyone from any party to achieve this. By working together – Democrats and Republicans, President-elect Trump and Congress – we can help make the American Dream a reality – a dream within reach of all Americans.
