Police in the Indian city of Mumbai have arrested a man in connection with a knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan last week.

Khan was one of India's biggest stars stabbed By an intruder into his home, in an attack that shook the country. He is recovering after surgery.

On Sunday, police said they had arrested the main suspect, Muhammad Sharif Islam Shehzad, adding that he is a Bangladeshi national residing in India illegally.

Shehzad's lawyer denied these accusations and said that he was not from Bangladesh.

Police say they arrested Shehzad from Thane area on the outskirts of Mumbai.

Dixit Gedam, deputy commissioner of Mumbai Police, told a press conference that preliminary evidence suggested that he had come to the city about six months ago and was working in a house cleaning agency using a fake name and ID.

Gedam said police suspected Mr Shehzad of breaking into Khan's house with the intention of robbing him.

On Sunday, a Mumbai court sent Shehzad to police custody for five days.

His lawyer is Sandeep Shekhan He told reporters That his client had become a “scapegoat.”

“There is no documented evidence indicating that he is a Bangladeshi citizen,” he said.

The attack on Khan made national headlines and raised questions about safety and security in Mumbai, one of India's most populous cities and its financial capital.

Khan was stabbed six times and suffered several injuries, including an injury to the back of his neck, in the attack that took place at his home in an upscale neighborhood.

Nurse Eliama Philip, who works at the Khan home, told police last week that she first noticed a man's shadow near the bathroom door late at night while she was in the baby's room with the nanny.

Ms Philip said a man appeared holding a wooden object in one hand and a long blade in the other, and warned the two not to make any noise. She said he asked for 10 million rupees (US$115,477, £94,511).

A fight broke out, during which Mrs. Philip was injured. She also said that on hearing the commotion, Khan and his wife rushed into the room and that the attacker hit the actor with a blade before fleeing.

Friday, investigators reportedly said detained At least five other people were later released for questioning in connection with the investigation.

Several men were detained because they resembled the attacker who was captured on surveillance cameras leaving the building.
