The design recalls scenes from the Roman novel “The Satyricon,” where banquets and baths were essential to displaying wealth and status, Zutstrigel said.

Decorated with frescoes, the complex is inspired by Greek culture, with an emphasis on themes of entertainment and erudition.

“The homeowner sought to create a spectacle, transforming his home into a Greek-style palace and gymnasium,” Zutstrigel said.

The remains of more than 1,000 victims were found during excavations at Pompeii, including two bodies inside the private dwelling with the doves – a woman aged between 35 and 50, who was clutching jewels and coins, and a younger man.

The discovery of their bodies was announced last year.
