Jurgen Klopp, former Liverpool coach, said he hopes Mohamed Salah will extend his contract with the club.

The Egyptian winger's contract expires in the summer, but there is hope on Merseyside that he will agree to extend his stay at Anfield.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Salah continues to excel at Liverpool, scoring 21 goals in 28 games this season, becoming the fourth highest scorer in the club's history along the way.

Speaking at his first press conference as Red Bull's global head of football, Klopp spoke of Salah's importance to the club.

He said: I hope he stays.

“This is the greatest striker Liverpool have had in the modern era. Obviously they have other good strikers, really good strikers.

“But he's a fantastic player, a fantastic human being, an outstanding athlete, the best ambassador they (Egypt) could have, really great in pretty much every department. So I hope he stays at Liverpool.”

Klopp waved farewell to Liverpool at the end of last season, marking the end of a hugely successful era that saw the Reds win the Premier League, Champions League and many other titles along the way.

His departure came as a shock to the football world, as the German announced that he no longer had the energy needed to be in the dugout.

Since then, he has taken on a role with Red Bull as head of football, drawing criticism from fans of his former club.

But Klopp has now explained why he accepted his new role away from direct management.

He added: “I always said I love what I do, but the moment I felt I could no longer do the job, it was over. It was the same at Mainz, Dortmund and Liverpool. I'm brutally honest with myself.”

“It wasn't just the energy. After over 1,000 games on the bench, and thousands of press conferences, I didn't want to do this anymore. I didn't want to stop working either, I just wanted to do something different and have a fresh start, and this opportunity gives me that.”

“I heard things but I didn't have any plans in that direction. I was focused on being a manager. I wanted to be the best version of myself in that role. When you're in a job you've been in for a long time, it's very stressful.”

“Game after match, you maintain a certain level and I was never completely happy with that. I wanted to learn new things and when I heard about this role, I knew I would do it.

Liverpool have excelled since new manager Arne Slott took over. The Reds team leads the English Premier League, has also reached the semi-finals of the League Cup, and is at the top of the Champions League table.
