England's Harry Hall produced a stunning late birdie blast to come back within two strokes of the lead heading into the final round of the PGA Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii.
Hall was four strokes from halfway at Waialae Country Club and was in danger of slipping out of contention after playing the first 13 holes of his third round to one under, only to birdie four of his last five and card a five-under 65.
The world No. 86 shot his approach from the 14th to score a 45-footer on the next, where Hall holed a putt on the 16th and added a two-putt birdie on the final fifth. To move to 11 under.
Hall sits in Group Five alongside Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and former Open champion Brian Harman, with JJ Spawn topping a crowded leaderboard that sees 15 players separated by just three strokes going into the final day.
“I think the last few times I was in competition, I put a little pressure on myself and had a goal in mind to reach,” Hall said. “I think I'll be a little more patient tomorrow, maybe take the pressure off my shoulders, go out there and try to make one shot at a time.”
Spaun mixed seven birdies with two birdies to take a third-round 65 and maintain a one-shot lead over Germany's Stefan Geiger — who jumped onto the leaderboard with a week-long round of 62 — Eric Kohl and Patrick Fishburne.
The 34-year-old Spawn's only previous PGA Tour win in 218 previous attempts came at the Texas Open in 2022. He had four top-10 finishes last year.
Denny McCarthy started the day as co-leader with Fishburne but a one-over 71 lead left him four shots off the pace.
Gary Woodland (10 under), Zach Johnson (8 under) are among the 27 players five shots in front, with last week's Sentry victor Hideki Matsuyama (7 under) another shot adrift and not quite out of contention either.
