The CEO of the English club, Rangers, supported the technical director, Philip Clement, despite the difficulties the club faces in catching up with the runaway leaders, Celtic, in the Scottish Premier League this season.

Celtic's win over Ross County on Saturday increased their lead at the top of Scottish football to 18 points, although Rangers could cut that to 15 if they beat St Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday.

Having won just three of his 11 away league games this season, Clement has come under fire from fans, but Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart said the board were sticking by the Belgian.

However, Clement's side have performed better in the Europa League this season, where they currently sit in eighth place, and the 50-year-old earned his first win in the Old Firm derby on January 2 with a 3-0 win over their fierce rivals. .

“I need to make some tough decisions, that comes with the role, but I'm committed to making the right decisions for Rangers, not just the popular ones,” Stewart said.

“We support Philippe at this time as a board. It is about taking a deeper look at the issues, addressing those issues and continuing to focus on building a stronger future for the club. A change of manager is not a magic solution.”

Stewart also revealed that there will be a “root and branch review of the entire football department” at Rangers.

The former Manchester United chief executive, who took up his role at Ibrox less than a month ago, said the review, which begins on Monday, will be carried out with external assistance and is scheduled to last between six and 12 weeks.

He also admitted that the club will look to add a player or two in the January transfer window.
