Gervonta Davis showed off his incredible hand speed today, as he trained with his trainer Barry Hunter on the gloves in preparation for his WBA lightweight title defense against Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Mets Master
Davis looks great with the gloves on, but that's an exaggeration because his opponent, super featherweight Roach, has no power and is outclassed in this fight. It would be great if Tank worked like a dog and fought someone with real talent. Then you become interested in watching him hit the glove, but not when it's another pick like all the others during Davis' carefully managed 12-year professional career.
Tank Davis' last seven opponents
-Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando “Rolly” Romero
– Isaac Cruz
-Mario Barrios
-Leo Santa Cruz
That's a mediocre group out there, and none of them are proper lightweight fighters, not one. So, it's great that Tank Davis excels at hitting gloves, but it's not worth it when you're facing marginal opposition on PPV for $75. These types of fights should be free to play because these matches are meant to be non-matches.
Tank's form closely resembled Floyd Mayweather Jr., his former promoter, in his glove training. But the two couldn't be farther apart in fighting style. Fortunately, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is much more entertaining to watch than Floyd Jr. was.
However, Tank is very similar to Mayweather in his cherry picking as well as his glove training. Floyd was the best at picking them off and staying away from dangerous predators during his career. Now, Tank follows his safety-first plan.
Where is the challenge?
Fans want to see Roach get a knockout (25-1-1, 15 KO) and then start fighting an opponent who has a chance to beat him. Davis or his management always selected fighters where he was highly favored.
They want to see a tank fight one of these sharks:
– Shakur Stevenson
– Keyshawn Davis
-Andy Cruz
– Edwin de los Santos
– Vasiliy Lomachenko
-William Zepeda
– Bakhram Murtazaliev
– Sebastian Fundora
– Serhiy Bohachuk
-Israel Madrimov
