Borussia Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin said “anything can happen” in the January transfer window, but warned that the club “will not get carried away” after reports linking it with a loan move for Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has spoken of his desire to leave Old Trafford for a new challenge after a miserable 18 months in which he struggled to reach his highest level while also making headlines for several off-field incidents.

The player's entourage has reportedly embarked on a European tour that includes stops in Milan and Dortmund to discuss a potential move for Rashford.

Shaheen warned against activity

Sahin, whose side are sixth in the Bundesliga ahead of their return to action after the winter break on Friday against defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, says any upcoming activity must be right for the club.

When asked about the window, he said: “Anything can happen.” It's not as easy in winter as it is in summer. We'll be willing to do something, but we'll only do it if it makes us better. We won't get carried away.”

Rashford could be very expensive

Rashford's deal will not be cheap with United reportedly hoping the loan move will see them relinquish responsibility for the bulk of the striker's £325,000 weekly wage.

This could be a major drawback for Dortmund whose model is based on signing young players with potential and bringing them forward.

Dortmund ended the first half of the season below its level, with only one win in five matches in all competitions.

But Sahin believes that the visit of Xabi Alonso's men will bring out the best in his players.

He added: “A win will be very important for the table.” “We are playing against a top opponent. We have always performed well against these teams so far. We want to get into the flow of the new year with a good game.

The hosts will be without Valdemar Anton, Almoguera Kabar due to illness, Niklas Sule due to injury and Pascal Gross due to suspension.
