West Ham striker Michail Antonio underwent surgery on a fractured lower limb after being involved in a traffic accident on Saturday.

The Jamaican international was involved in an accident in Essex and had to be cut off from his car.

A West Ham statement read: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio has undergone surgery for a fractured lower extremity following a traffic accident on Saturday afternoon (7 December 2024).

He added: “Michael will continue to be monitored in the hospital over the coming days.”

There was an outpouring of support for the 34-year-old after the news emerged with West Ham expressing their gratitude and thanks to the emergency services.

The statement added: “Everyone at the club wishes Michael a speedy recovery and would like to express our sincere gratitude to the football family in general for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as offering a huge thank you to the emergency services and first team.” The responders who attended to Michael in the immediate aftermath of his accident, and the medical team who continue to assist him in his recovery.

“The club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Reports this morning suggested that Antonio had suffered a severe leg fracture that could force him to retire.
