Ange Postecoglou claimed that even Mohamed Salah will struggle in his Tottenham team despite the Liverpool striker's impressive form in front of goal.
Salah has scored 21 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this season, and will now look to carry that form into Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham. Live on Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, Postecoglou's side dropped to 12th in the Premier League table after a run of four games without a win, which included a 6-3 loss to Liverpool in December.
Salah scored two goals and provided two assists during that encounter and despite his scintillating form throughout the 2024/25 season so far, Postecoglou stated that the Egyptian striker will still struggle to thrive in his team.
“Mo is a world-class player, but if you put him in our team at the moment, I'm not sure he would have the same impact because of the situation we are in as a group,” the Tottenham coach said.
“He's playing in a great team and flying at the moment. I'd venture to say that if you put Sonny (Heung-Min Son) in the Liverpool team, I think his goal-scoring return would be decent.”
“It's difficult for our players at the moment, they are trying hard to be the best they can be.”
There is no rush to determine Son's long-term future after activating a one-year option
Tottenham go into the clash in north London buoyed by the knowledge that Son Heung-min will remain at the club until at least the summer of 2026 after activating the option to extend his contract.
The South Korean striker is an influential player for Tottenham, having scored 169 goals in 431 appearances, but Postecoglou insists there is no rush to discuss his long-term future.
“It's not something that should be imposed one way or another,” he said.
“When you have a player like Sonny who has such a high profile at the club – and I know how much the club values him and how much he loves the club – I think it will all come together.
“I don't think the club will be in a position to try to impose anything or that Sony will try to impose anything.
He added: “There is enough respect and credibility between the two parties, which makes this type of discussion happen naturally, and I believe it will reach a result that everyone will be happy with.”
Angie: Success in the Carabao Cup can help our future
Postecoglou traditionally looks to league form as the best measure of his team's progress, but with 10 players missing due to injury and 10 players missing. The Pope walked And James Madison Stop service against Arne Slot's Aspect, he believes that something special can be forged in adversity.
He said, “We are facing a difficult season. Our level in the league is very bad and we need to improve.”
“But we are in the semi-finals of the competition and with the group of players we have at the moment, if we can achieve something in their careers, it sets you up well for what we are trying to do.” To build here I think it does.
“It's not about everything, as I've said many times. But if we reach the final and win the title, we'll look back at the period we were in as a small group of players.” Having to climb even further to get there.
“That would be as worthwhile an accomplishment as actually winning it.”
