If you are traveling to the UK early this week, you may need to apply online for travel authorization before travelling.
Starting Wednesday, the United Kingdom will require US and Canadian citizens and citizens of more than three dozen other countries to obtain a so-called electronic travel authorization, or ETA.
Here's what travelers need to know:
What is an electronic travel authorization?
An ETA is an advance authorization for travelers from countries where the UK does not require visas.
The UK launched the program in 2024 for visiting citizens from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It will go into effect on Wednesday in a group of additional countries.
Travelers will still need to clear immigration upon arrival. The United States requires an e-pass for citizens of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other countries whose citizens are not required to obtain a visa for entry. Later in 2025, EU countries will require US citizens and citizens of other countries to meet similar criteria.
You do not need an ETA if you have a visa and are authorized to live, work or study in the UK
How do I get one?
You can apply online using the UK ETA application Android and iPhone. The application costs £10 (about $12.50), and is valid for two years and for visits of up to six months. Fees are paid by credit card.
Travelers will have to upload their passport photos and themselves to submit the application.
How long does it take?
Applicants can wait about three days for a decision sent via email.
What about children?
Everyone who qualifies for an ETA will need one, including infants and children.
What if I'm online in the UK?
You will need an ETA even if you are flying to a UK airport for a connecting flight to another country.
