Robbie Keane has been appointed coach of Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

The 44-year-old former Liverpool, Leeds and Tottenham striker won the title in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv last season and now faces a new challenge in Europe.

He will replace Pascal Janssen, who moved to coach New York City, with Ferencvaros in second place in the table after 16 matches.

A statement on the club's official website said: “We announce the successor to Dutchman Pascal Janssen to lead our 35-time champion and 24-time cup-winning team, as 146-time Republic of Ireland international Robbie Keane has signed.” on monday.

“The new coach arrived in Budapest on Sunday evening and will leave on Tuesday to join our team in the training camp in Spain.”

Kane moved into coaching in 2018 as player-manager with ATK India and served as assistant to Irish coach Mick McCarthy during his second spell in charge, later taking on a similar role under former Tottenham team-mate Jonathan Woodgate at Middlesbrough.

He was part of Sam Allardyce's staff at Leeds as they unsuccessfully attempted to escape unexpected relegation in the Premier League at the end of the 2022-23 season, but then Maccabi offered him the chance to manage on his own.

His first match with the team will be in the Europa League against Eintracht Frankfurt on January 23.
