Ten people died and at least 35 others were injured after a man drove into large crowds in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early hours of New Year's Day, authorities said.
Here's what we know so far about what happened and who committed the crime.
How did the attack develop?
At 03:15 local time on New Year's Day, a Ford pickup truck plowed into crowds gathered on Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter.
Surveillance footage shows a white Ford F-150 Lightning driving down the sidewalk to get around the police car before crashing into the pedestrian.
Police described the act as “extremely premeditated” and added that the attacker – identified as Shams al-Din Jabbar – was “intent on causing the carnage and the damage he caused”.
“This man was trying to run over as many people as possible,” New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said.
Jabbar was also armed and opened fire on law enforcement, wounding two officers. He was then shot dead by police.
Wyatt Davis, from Shreveport, Louisiana, told the BBC that he was detained at a bar with a large group following the attack while police secured the scene.
He added that when they left, “they were passing by the bodies of the dead and wounded all over the street.”
Who is Shams al-Din Jabbar?
The FBI identified the attacker as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabbar, an Army veteran and US citizen from Texas.
An Islamic State-linked flag was found in the car he was driving, and the FBI said it was investigating connections Jabbar may have had with terrorist groups.
The agency also said investigators do not believe the suspect was solely responsible for the attack. Suspected explosive devices were found in the area.
A long gun with a “suppressive device” – which acts as a silencer – was also found.
According to a now-removed LinkedIn profile, Jabbar worked in various roles in the US Army, including human resources and information technology, before his discharge.
He studied at George State University from 2015 to 2017, graduating with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems.
It also appears that he was working in real estate and had a license that expired in 2021. He has a criminal record related to traffic violations and theft.
The pickup truck he was driving was electric and is believed to have been rented in Texas via an app.
Who are the victims?
Police said 10 people were killed and at least 35 injured. None have been publicly named.
The president of the University of Georgia said that one of its students was seriously injured, while the Israeli government said that two citizens were among the injured.
Police said the victims appeared to be mostly locals from New Orleans, although many tourists were visiting for New Year's celebrations and the now-postponed Sugar Bowl, part of the College Football Playoffs.
It was scheduled to begin later Wednesday evening at Caesars Superdome, not far from the site of the attack.
Where did it happen?
Bourbon Street is a popular nightlife spot and tourist hotspot filled with restaurants, bars and clubs offering live music.
It is located within the French Quarter in New Orleans, a lively area that attracts tourists and locals, especially to celebrate the New Year.
Established by the French in 1718, the original street grid designed at that time is the heart of what attracts visitors to the city.
Each year, more than a million people flock to the famous Mardi Gras carnival and springtime parade, which is famous for the colorful strings of beads worn by partygoers.
