Ten people were killed and 30 others were injured after a person plowed his car into a large crowd in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana's largest city, local officials said on Wednesday.
Local authorities described the attack that occurred early on New Year's Day in a statement as a “mass casualty incident” that occurred on Canal and Bourbon Street, in the center of the city's tourist area. The statement added that the injured are receiving treatment in five hospitals in the region.
Bourbon Street is one of the main streets in the city's historic French Quarter, and is full of bars, restaurants and music venues, attracting local and international visitors.
