Newcastle piled misery on Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as they condemned the Red Devils to a fourth successive defeat on Monday evening.

The signs were ominous from the start as Newcastle immediately asserted themselves in the game and did not take more than three minutes to open the scoring. Alexander Isak scored for the sixth consecutive Premier League match by heading in Lewis Hall's cross without any intervention.

The visitors' midfield had developed into the best in the division, and United's aging players had no answers. Newcastle were completely in control, and Isak wasted a great chance to double their lead before Joelinton finally scored 19 minutes later.

Joshua Zirkzee's withdrawal after 30 minutes was a damning indictment of United's sorry display (and Amorim's bizarre team selection), but the home side had some sparkle at the end of the first half. Rasmus Hoglund and Casemiro both missed good chances to bring the Red Devils back into the game from nothing.

There was more calm in the second half as United finally got a foothold in the game and had more eyes on Martin Dubravka's goal. Harry Maguire hit the post and Matthijs de Ligt curled in a shot in the same sequence before substitute Leni Euro headed wide from Christian Eriksen's corner kick.

Despite the promotion, Newcastle managed to keep the Red Devils at bay and they managed to hang on in relative comfort with a rare league victory at Old Trafford – only their third since 1972.

Chelsea lost to Ipswich It means Eddie Howe's side are only three points behind the fourth-placed Blues.
