Former Everton captain Don Hutchison has hit back at Neal Maupay following the striker's recent social media post in which he criticized the Toffees.

Hutchison described Maupay, who is on loan at Marseille from Everton, as a “failure” after the striker targeted the Merseyside club on X Day following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

“Whenever I have a bad day I check the Everton score and smile,” wrote Maupay, who is known for his trolling and previously posted 'Shawshank Redemption' memes after leaving Goodison Park in the summer.

Although the 28-year-old is still technically owned by the Blues, Marseille are obligated to make the deal permanent in the summer meaning he has played his final game for Everton.

Hutchison, who played for Everton in the Premier League between 1998 and 2000, responded: “Everton are clearly living rent-free in their head.

“Everton fans are encouraged to know that every night he thinks about how much he has failed and that he cannot cope or cope with playing for such a great club.”

Hutchison was not the only person to publicly criticize Maupay for his position.

Former boxer Tony Bellew, who supports Everton, responded to As a former player. Speaking this way (you're) part of the problem.

Maupay signed for Everton from Brighton in 2022 for an undisclosed fee. During his time at Goodison Park, he scored one League One goal in 29 appearances.

He has played regularly under Roberto De Zerbe at Marseille this season, making 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing four assists.

De Zerbe's team currently ranks second in the French League, ten points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
