(Reuters) – Seven people were injured in New York City on Christmas Day when a taxi jumped the sidewalk and struck pedestrians outside a Macy's store after the taxi driver suffered a medical episode, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in midtown Manhattan near Macy's flagship store in Herald Square near the corner of West 34th Street and Avenue of the Americas, or Sixth Avenue. With its elaborately decorated display windows, the store is a magnet for tourists and native New Yorkers during the holidays.
Police added that in addition to the 58-year-old taxi driver, among those injured were a 9-year-old boy, two 49-year-old women, and four other women aged 19, 37 and 41 years.
A 49-year-old woman was shot in the leg, a 9-year-old boy was cut, and a 41-year-old woman was hit in the head and were taken to the hospital, police said.
The remaining three pedestrians refused medical care, police said, adding that all injuries were not life-threatening.
Media photos of the cabin showed a badly damaged vehicle with broken parts and scratches everywhere.
