Not just with the ball, Bumrah was impressive with his leadership skills in the only Test in which he led India in this series. The 31-year-old fast bowler led India in the first Test in Perth in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma and immediately made an impact with eight wickets in the match.
Rohit Sharma praises Jasprit Bumrah's skills
Rohit Sharma attended a press conference on Christmas Eve where he was asked about Jasprit Bumrah's performance in the ongoing series. Rohit praised Bumrah for his tremendous impact and expressed hope that it will continue further.
“It's nice to see it – a lot of people from the opposition camp are talking about it, how they need to deal with it and things like that,” Rohit told reporters.
“These are usually the discussions that happen everywhere (but) his impact on the series so far is tremendous. I hope he continues to do that because these (next) two matches are very important for us,” he added.
The Indian skipper also praised Bumrah's faith in his skills and claimed that he does not need to be told much. According to Rohit, the other bowlers just need to keep up the pressure on the batsmen when Bumrah is in such form.
“The way he works is very clear and simple. He has so much belief in his own skill set that there is not much discussion we need to have with him…that makes it easy for me,” Rohit explained.
“It's always good to have someone like him in your team. When he is at this level, the other bowlers' job becomes a little easier. All they have to do is try to maintain that pressure,” he added.
Rohit Sharma supports the other bowlers to play a supporting role
Also speaking about India's bowling attack, Rohit Sharma also feels that the other bowlers need to step up and play a suitable supporting role to Jasprit Bumrah. However, before that Muhammad Siraj, Akash Deband other bowlers try hard and sometimes have no luck.
“Bumrah is definitely making the most of it. Siraj and the other guys playing around him obviously know that they need to step up to get the job done as well. They are trying really hard,” the Indian captain stated.
“They were a bit unlucky as well, they played a lot of games and wasted chances, and also missed some chances – these things can happen. For me as a captain, my message is very clear and simple – keep running hard and easy. “Keep doing what you are,” he explained. “You did it in the past, and it's about doing it again now.”
Jasprit Bumrah shined
Jasprit Bumrah is the highest bowler of the series with 21 wickets in three Tests at an average of 10.30. He has been the saving grace for India in this series as he has consistently performed well.
Bumrah has consistently troubled Australia's top order with his outstanding skills and had a role in Nathan McSweeney's ouster from the team after the initial three Tests. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj is India's second-highest bowler with 13 wickets in three matches.
It is clear that the bowling line-up is heavily reliant on Bumrah and the other players need to step up their efforts if India wants to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Akash Deep showed promise in the last match and is expected to perform better at the MCG.
