Tiger Woods believes his son Charlie's golf admiration is “unlimited” after he fired a one-putt into the runner-up finish at the PNC Championship.
The former world number one was playing alongside his 15-year-old son in the 36-hole scramble event, where only previous major championship winners or players are eligible to participate alongside a family member.
Woods' team retained a share of the lead after an opening-round 59 at the Ritz-Carlton Club in Florida, while hopes of victory rose when Charlie shot the first hole-in-one of his career during a thrilling final day.
The duo carded a 15-under 57 to finish tied at the top of the leaderboard at 28 under along with Team Langer — consisting of two-time Masters winner Bernhard Langer and his son Jason, who cruised to victory with a dramatic eagle on the first play — off the hole.
Woods has previously described the event as his “fifth major championship”, making his fifth consecutive appearance in the tournament, with the 48-year-old proud of his son's progress.
“(Charlie) has gotten better in every aspect of the game,” Woods said. “This is a commitment to training and developing as a player. I think most of us forget that he is only 15 years old.
“I know he's been doing it in front of the media for a long time, but since he's only 15, I think it's incredible what he's been able to achieve so far and the ceiling he has is unlimited.”
Historic ace for Woods on the final day
Charlie's first shot on the first hole came with a stunning putt on the par-4 par, where he hit an iron from seven feet to about six feet from the hole before watching it roll into the cup.
“It was a pleasure to have that moment with Charlie, get his first hole-in-one with Sam (his daughter) in the bag, just our family and friends,” Woods added. “That's what this event is about. It's about interconnectedness and family.
“To have this experience together, I know we didn't win, but the truth is we competed. No one really did anything wrong. We had to deserve it and that's what you want to get. Against Langers – they played great.”
On getting his first ace, Woods Jr. said, “It was great having my dad there. That was a lot of fun. It was just a perfect ace, a little cut there. Of course I couldn't see it go in. So, gross but that's all right.”
What's next for the tiger?
Tiger's appearance was however his first since he missed the cut at The Open in July and underwent back surgery in September, to relieve the spasms and pain he has suffered throughout the 2024 season, with Woods unable to participate in the Hero World Challenge at the time. Earlier this month.
“I'm nowhere near in competitive shape,” Woods admitted to the PGA Tour website. “I'm a great partner. We've put together a great team this week, and that's the whole joy of it.”
He later added: “I've done a few things here and there. I can hit a few shots here and there. It's training, every day, doing the little things and keeping moving forward, and I'll keep moving forward next year.” “.
Woods has committed to appearing in the inaugural TGL when it starts in January, where he will represent the “Juniper Links” indoor golf league that mixes virtual and real-time golf, although he has yet to confirm his full 2025 schedule.
