Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca beat American Lerner Tian to become the second youngest player to win the Next Generation ATP Finals title on Sunday in Saudi Arabia.
The 18-year-old dropped his first set before returning to contention and then dominated the rest of the match to defeat Tian 2-4, 4-3 (8), 4-0, 4-2 in Jeddah.
Fonseca won all five matches in the tournament starting with a win over top seed Arthur Fels on the first day of round matches.
Italian Jannik Sinner, who won the ATP Finals tournament this year, was the only player younger than Fonseca to win the season-ending tournament.
“I was really nervous before the match. I knew it would be very difficult,” Fonseca said.
“I played a final against Lerner at the 2023 US Open and I know the way he can play. He's a nice guy and a great player, so I knew it was going to be tough, mentally and physically. But I got through.”
Fonseca hit eight aces without committing any double faults and controlled his first serve, while Tian was the best in the victory, but he committed ten more unforced errors.
The tournament, established in 2017, features the top eight players aged 20 or under on tour in a given year.
Before the final, Fonseca spoke of his desire to emulate Sinner, who was his partner at last year's ATP Finals.
