Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim suggested his players lacked an “understanding” of match management after Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford for the second season in a row on Sunday.

Dean Howison's header in the 30th minute, Justin Kluivert's penalty in the 61st minute and Antoine Semenyu's goal two minutes later ensured United remained in 13th place, eight points off fourth place.

“It was really difficult for the players and the fans,” Amorim said after the penalty kick and the third (quick) goal. BBC Sport.

“It's a very difficult moment, but we already knew the context was difficult. Our focus is to remain calm when (allowing) the goal.

He added: “We have to manage these moments and try to pass some calm to the players, and understand that the match has different moments.”

Amorim: United are ready for the challenge

Huijsen's opener underscored United's fragility from set-pieces as the Cherries finished fifth above Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Bruno Fernandes sent a shot wide and it was blocked by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga before halftime as Amorim tasted defeat for the fourth time in his nine-game spell.

“We received a foul and a free kick and (we received),” said the Portuguese, who arrived from Sporting on November 1.

“Then we had a lot of chances – without playing really well, we were winning second balls, creating chances and getting close to the goal. We have only one way to improve: training. We are ready to take on the challenge.”

Marcus Rashford's return is uncertain

Amorim was non-committal about Marcus Rashford's involvement when United next visit Wolves on December 26 (5.30pm GMT).

Former England striker Rashford is under contract until 2028, but has been left out of United's last three squads.

United have lost four of their last five domestic matches as they prepare to host Newcastle on December 30 (8pm) before visiting current leaders Liverpool on January 5 (4.30pm).
