At least 13 people were killed after an Indian Navy speedboat lost control and collided with a passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai, an Indian Navy spokesman said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that among the dead were three naval personnel, while more than 100 people were rescued.
Footage of the accident posted online shows the speedboat rotating before colliding with the ferry, which later capsized.
The Indian Navy said there was an “engine malfunction”.
The privately owned ferry was on its way to the Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination, when it collided with the speedboat.
“A Navy vehicle that was undergoing engine tests lost control and collided with a passenger ferry,” the Navy said in a statement, adding that it regretted the “tragic loss” of life.
A passenger on the ship told ABP Majha news channel: “The speedboat collided with our boat and water started entering our boat and it capsized. The driver asked us to wear life jackets.”
The passenger, who did not give his name, said, “I swam for 15 minutes before another boat rescued me.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “The boat accident in Mumbai is sad. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon.”
